To truly understand an auteur as a man all you have to do is pay attention to how he portrays his women.
Choose a director. Think about it.
From cinder book, entry dated February 24, 2010:
“you see a few films by a male director and you quickly get the impression of what a woman means to him. in most cases a woman is trouble or mystery but every now and then you get a film that leaves an entirely different impression.
“there’s a guy who has done one film- a rather dark comedy- and i got the impression that he values women in a singular way. it was quite different. i also got the impression that something terrible had happened to a woman he cared for and he wished he could do something about it. this particular film exorcised that, i think.”
